GOLF AND MOUTAIN

The holidays in the mountains do not date from yesterday. The natives Provencal or nice gladly recall that their parents left the coast from the first heat of July at the end of the school exams and only returned to their regression at the end of August for the beginning of the classes. The golfers themselves are increasingly seeking to satisfy their passion in a mountain environment. While the terrain accidents are not always favorable to the architecture of golf (some courses are “cow meadows” or cross-country ski slopes), players console themselves by thinking that altitude helps them to remake a capital of blood cells Red. So put your clubs in the trunk of the car and on the way to a special mountain Golfs through the chain of the Alps, from the French Riviera to Alto Adige, through the Mont Blanc, the Jungfrau and Tyrol, towards charming courses , sometimes misunderstood. Don’t forget the small wools, umbrellas and road maps! Golf and moutain

Play golf on the French Riviera at an altitude of 1 800 m on the course of the Valberg golf Club at an hour of Nice and an hour thirty of Cannes? Sponsored by the artist Sacha Sosno, conceived by the architect Olivier Dongradi and built by Golf & Paysage, this by 34 of 2510m symbolizes the dynamism of the station and fits in its strategy of “all Seasons” by proposing a new activity, off-ski.
Fairways of impeccable quality with regard to climatological conditions. Natural greens to make more of a plain course fade. Neat departures opening on a fairytale panorama, characterise this emerald creation whose variety of tones is exacerbated by the purity of the high altitude lights.
You will remain smug of admiration in front of the landscape offered to the departures of the highest holes of the course. A grandiose view at 360 ° from Mount Medina to the Saint Honore chain. The exhilarating impression of sending your drives beyond the mountain ranges. For non-golfers, pacing the route offers the pleasure of an incredible alpine hike, in a preserved nature where many animals are housed.

Taulane, on the road Napoleon
En 1815, this route led the emperor of Golfe Juan to Lyon by Grasse, Digne, Gap and Grenoble and became Napoleon only in 1932 and was then called the Grand route: it connected the counties of Provence, Dauphiné and Savoy in the medieval period, in the footsteps of the “via Salinaria “, route of the salt of the Romans to go to the saltworks of Castellane. Golfers can take a step in Taulane, at the Logis du Pin, at an altitude of 1 000 m in a pine forest surrounded by nipples whose Duchenne exceeds the 1 400 m. Facing the lake that borders the greens of the 9th and 18th of the golf course, the château, built in 1750 for the beautiful eyes of the Marquise de Lisle who gave its name to the gastronomic table, has been restored and 45 rooms of charm and comfort have been arranged in this hostel D E Luxe * * * *.
In this bowl of greenery, the South African champion Gary Player has plotted a course of high quality adapted to all the indexes by very well calculated departures. Ranked among the top 20 in France, it is a mid-forest, mid-mountain course. The concentration is seldom diverted by the sounds of civilization, except sometimes by the arrival of a helicopter golfer. Heated swimming pool, sauna, Jacuzzi, 4×4 hike and visit of the Verdon gorges.

Bayard, the collar without reproach…
After the fortified sides of Castellane and Digne, Sistern aboard the Durance marks the demarcation between Provence and Dauphiné with the ascent and Col Bayard. A little before the summit, Gap is called the “soft capital” of the Southern Alps because it is good to live in a sunny climate 300 days a year at 735 m altitude. The cathedral and its bell-porch with colorful materials and the old houses that surround it attract the eye while the famous Café of the Lycée is a brewery worthy of the name. 7 km away, Bayard Plateau at an altitude of 1 250 m is an oxygenation centre of 120 ha which offers 60 km of cross-country ski slopes in winter, but in summer a beautiful 18 holes of golf drawn in 1989 by H. Lambert in the middle of a forest that protects Winds with very nice views of the Ecrins Park and the hills of the Durance Valley. From the green of the 9th and the departure of the 10, we enjoy an exceptional glance on the valley where the lake and the dam of Serre-Ponçon are encased. For some golfers, the Gap Bayard Golf Course is the reference mountain range: Dream panorama, no artificial noise, pastoral setting and correct elevation. In view of the interest it arouses, it is advisable to reserve its departure and a cart, especially for those who lack of training. Attention, we do not play 9 holes, because the 9 is at the end of the plateau… with the View!

In the Vercors, Silence and solitude
Between Die and Grenoble, at 1 200 m, the Plateau du Vercors, surrounded by cliffs over 2 000 m, is famous for its isolation. Today, the ancient villages have organized, especially around Villard-de-Lans to offer, in winter, a Nordic ski area of 130 km, and in summer, quality golf, of which Corrençon is a fine example. Since a landslide at the end of the Bourne Gorge has clogged the D131, it is only accessible by Sassenage near Grenoble and the road of the Val de Lans after Villard. Corrençon is the end of the world and this course of silence and solitude runs between the trees on herbues slopes at the foot of the Great Gnat (2 284 m) visible not only from the highest point (1 150 m) of golf to the green of 14 , but many other places. It’s a real mountain golf, we go up and down. The first hole, the longest (445 m) rises, the last (132 m) descends in the angel’s jump above the village and the other 16 are on the rider in this decor of pines, spruces, birches, trembles and maples where the balls tend to follow the slopes… If you are silent and observant, you can see Ibex, sheep or chamois, Royal eagles and Grandsducs, grouse and black grouse even “the butterfly Bird”.

Meribel, in the Parc de la Vanoise
Created in 1963 for the protection of the Ibex, the Parc de la Vanoise in Savoy, between the Col de la Croix of Bonhomme and Modae, is the largest nature reserve in Western Europe. Its 125 km are populated by ibex, deer, chamois, weasels, Ermines, marmots as well as eagles, Grand Dukes, Grouse and others pent up by the expansion of human habitat. Meribel is one of the 28 communes of the park located in the center of the immense ski area of the “Three Valleys” formed by the subtributaries of the Isère: Doron of the Alreads, Doron de Belleville and Doron de Rosière crowned by Courchevel. Meribel is the heart of it, because it was from 1938 the first site identified for the creation of a winter sports station.
Meribel was also a golf pioneer, asking Thierry Sprecher and Gery Wahid to draw between 1 500 and 1 800 m above sea level a golf course opened in 1978. It is an 18 holes of mountain which the fairways run on the gentle slopes between the forests of FIR and which will be returned to the practice golfers (the 9 highest holes were in renovations since 2004) on the occasion of the Meribel golf Show from 20 to 22 a Fall 2006.
It is not a very long course (5 538 m by 71), but not as easy as it may appear, even if only at the first hole where you have to cross a water obstacle to 135 m of the tee on a narrow fairway. The 3 is a long par-5 of 556 m with left dog-leg and the 9 is considered the most beautiful of the course. At 10, the green with its various plateaus is the most difficult and the 13th is guarded by water on three sides, but the place is panoramic in the same way as the departure of the 18 open on the mountain horizon of the Vanoise. A nice conclusion!

Minimal grades and softened slope modeling will not engage you in a daunting physical challenge.

Facing the Mont Blanc
The Mont Blanc Massif is home to two courses: the Golf of the mountain of the winter in Megève and the side of Chamonix. At 1 300 m, the golf course drawn by Henry Cotton, a former British champion, across the gentle slopes of the foot of the mount of the mountain, is the oldest golf course in France. As Megève is an attractive resort, summer and winter, there are always some famous personalities who do not necessarily come to show themselves but to enjoy themselves and meet other friends. As is the case with the Snow Cup organized in the middle of winter. Very well-known, the Chalet of Mont-Delicatessen, the flagship of Relais and Châteaux, welcomes and treats its guests in the best Rothschild tradition. Paradox, for the most prestigious mountain golf courses: At 1 000 m, the golf of Chamonix, between the Mont Blanc and the Brévent, is flat (except on 6 and 16). It runs along and across the torrentueux rumblings of the Arve as the course crosses seven times. This torrent is ertainement the stream that carries the largest number of lost bullets without hope of recovery! It was Trent Jones Senior who drew the current route in 1982 varying the pleasures which the principal, outside of golf, is the view: Mont Blanc, Midi needle, green Needle, Jorasses, Brévent… are a unique setting in the world that will console possible Golfing setbacks as the fairways are narrow and woody and the water obstacles ubiquitous!

The world’s tallest golf courses

At 4 372 m above sea level, the TUCTU Golf Club in Morococha, Peru was a long time in the Guinness Book as the highest in the world. In fact, swallowed by clouds and dense vegetation, it is no longer in very good shape and abandons itself. Even so, at this altitude where the nose bleeds, it is not healthy to play without acclimatization. Those who wish can play at 3 300 m at La Paz Golf Club in Bolivia which is therefore the highest. Headaches, nausea, edema or worse, can happen to those who are not prepared for altitudes, say the doctors. Here is nevertheless a list of the highest mountain courses:
• La Paz Golf Club, La Paz, Bolivia: 3 600 m
• Jade Dragon Snow, Yunnan Province, China: 3 300 m
• Copper Creek GC, copper Mountain, Col, USA: 3 250 m
Mt. Massive GC, Leadville, Colorado, USA: 3 180 m
• Telluride GC, Telluride, Col, USA: 3 150 m
• Breckenridge GC, Breckenridge, Col, USA: 3 100 m
• The Lodge GC, Cloudcroft, New Mexico, USA: 3 050 m
• Gulmarg GC, Jammu & Kashmir: 2 900 m
• Vialatta GC, Sestriere, France: 2 300 m
• Incline Village Golf, Nevada, USA: 2 250 m
• Tignes GC, Tignes, France: 2 150 m
