Birth and development of golf

Golf was born in the Alpes-Maritimes, on the Côte d’Azur, thanks to our English friends more than a century ago, but its expansion developed in the 90s with the emergence of new courses such as Royal Mougins, Saint Donat, Riviera Barbossi, Claux Amic, La Grande Bastide.

Renowned golf architects

Renowned architects have left their mark such as Robert Trent Jones Senior, Robert Von Hagge, Peter James Gannon and Percy Boomer, Harry Colt, Cabell Robinson, Willie Park Jnr, Donald Harradine… The Alpes-Maritimes are home to 10 18-hole courses, 4 9-hole courses as well as a few compact courses.

To all these favorite golf locations, their two most beautiful and greatest assets: Soleil and Ciel d’Azur.

What to visit?

Like many departments located by the sea, the Alpes-Maritimes are not simply a strip of coastline but a territory that extends inland to the peaks of the Southern Alps.

Mythical places

On the coast, the famous Baie des Anges in Nice, once sung by the local boy Dick RIVERS. Its pebble beaches and the color of the Mediterranean with its two contrasting shades of blue, turquoise and navy.

From East to West

Towards the East, Menton and its famous citrus fruits: lemons with a festival that takes place every year in February/March.

Monaco and the Rock, the Principality and its 2 km2 do not allow the construction of a golf course. And, at the risk of disappointing some of our readers, the Monte Carlo Golf Club is… in France!
To the West, Biot and its glassmakers, crafts and artists at work live. Further on Antibes and its famous Picasso museum, and a little further on in Cannes its Festival of May and the Lérins Islands.
To finish in Mandelieu La Napoule with its famous Mimosa festival where the whole town is adorned in yellow.

The hinterland

The hinterland is just as attractive with Grasse, Saint Paul de Vence, Eze, Gourdon, Cabris and the most beautiful hilltop villages, most of which are built in a spiral shape. Each one organizes its patronal festival during the summer with pétanque competitions and sometimes meals on the village square.
The Alpes-Maritimes are ideal for good food with its restaurants serving local produce and increasingly good wines, notably the Château de Bellet on the heights of Nice.

Skiing and Golf

You can play golf and ski in the same day if you wish, or even play snowgolf. To reach the snowy peaks, you either take the Route Napoléon to get to Gréolières Les Neiges above Grasse. Or the Grenoble road and enter the Vésubie Valley and enjoy the peaks of Isola 2000 and brush against the Italian border… Or go to Auron, the chalet resort.

Skiing and golf are at the Valberg resort where you reach its 1800 m via the Var Valley and the Gorges du Cians. The most magical 9-hole course ever built in a natural environment, a 360-degree panorama of the Mercantour park (open from the end of May to the end of October)
